Our client-service mentality can make it counter-intuitive for us to say “no” to a client when their requests conflict with our personal time.  I’ve discovered that doing so is actually one of the most important elements to succeeding in our personal and professional lives.

In my experience, saying “no” not only helps me maintain work/life balance, but has also helped me grow professionally by increasing my confidence and improving my image with clients. After all, successful people understand the issues we face because they do too from time to time; and respect those who share their professional and personal values.

How do you say “no” to clients? How has it helped you become a better professional? What advice do you have for those who find it hard to say “no” to a difficult or valuable client?

Hi Ramiro,

May I suggest that you write a letter sent Personal & Confidential which says.....

Over the last four months I have professionally prepared and finally delivered the results we're seeking for you to obtain 3M of life insurance. Now that this phase of my work is complete I am preplexed as to why you are not able to repsond to my repeated attempts to complete this confidential project.

From one professional to another I would simply ask that we have a brief conversation so I can clear up what appears to be disappointment and fulfull my professional responsibilty to [the attorney who referred you the client] and you.....

Ramiro does this help?

My best,

Phil Harriman

Need help. An estate planning attorney referred a client for $3M of life insurance. Communication was perfect with the client until the application was approved which took 4 months. Client was kept up to date during the underwriting process at all times. When the policy was approved and isssued, the client turned off all communications with me and the referring attorney. The client by the way is also an attorney. I would like to send the applicant a letter, but I'm not sure what to say since he has not responded to any of my phone calls or emails.
