MDRT Immediate Past President Philip E. Harriman, CLU, ChFC Tuesday, September 5, 2006
It is with great pride that I submit my first Blog post as MDRT President.I am honored and humbled to lead this great organization.
During the coming year, my top priority is mobilizing MDRT’s resources to help more people prepare for retirement. Our Boomertirement™ Industry Summit will be a key component of that effort – click here for a previous post on the event.
Reaching out to other industry organizations will also be an important objective. We will reach out to our old friends, and seek new friends too, who believe in what we do to serve our clients. We will also make a special effort to advocate why life, disability, long-term care and critical illness insurance are at the heart of a sound financial plan.
Of course, all things great and worthy can not be done alone. As my predecessor Stephen O. Rothschild would say, it requires “Many Doing Right Together.”
It will take passion and hard work.It will also require creativity and ideas, so please share your thoughts:
What ideas do you have for meeting our objectives? How can members around the world support these efforts? How can we each promote them on a “grassroots” level in our communities?
I look forward to hearing from you and to a very successful year for MDRT.
Christopher Lim Geok Meng Thursday, April 19, 2007Dear Phil,
Good news from you for our members here in Singapore.
You and Thomas Ensign are working hard and very fast. You have touched base with the members.
We met about one month ago when both of you were in Singapore. Thank you for taking time to come and listen to our concerns. You have made an effort to bring our concerns to MDRT Executive Committee immediately hence the result of an achievable FYC. Thanks, we don't have to wait for another year to make the adjustment.
I am sure the members here appreciate that MDRT took time and reacted to our concerns immediately. Many have emailed me when the earlier amount was told to us. I shall broadcast the good news to them now.
Thank you once again.
Kind Regards,
Christopher Lim

Phil Harriman Wednesday, September 20, 2006What a great pleasure it was to be with Bob and about 20 other members who make up the heart and soul of MDRT in Melbourne Aus.
I am so positive and excited about the potential our members have there because the regulatory environment seems to have reached some balance; and it has become clear to the public that their financial plans are lacking proper protection from the risks of living too long, dying too soon or becoming hurt and unable to work.
This opportunity for financial services has never been better and thanks to our members in Melbourne, MDRT is in a premier position to prove MDRT members are among the best.
And by the way, if you're in Melbourne please give our Mate Bob Nixon a ring. He is also a wine grower with an angelic spot to sip his award winning wine and have a bite from the barbie.

Bob Nixon Tuesday, September 19, 2006I was thrilled to be at Phil's first official function as MDRT President in Melbourne (Aust.) just a week ago.
The view from the function room's 44th floor window was a fitting back-drop to the maiden speech of a man with great vision. Phil was presented with an Aussie Rules football, signed by the members present to mark the occasion.
Let good luck and good times go with him.

Phil Harriman Wednesday, September 6, 2006Hi Chip,
Thanks for your kind words about MDRT, I feel the same way about the impact our members and our association has had on me personally and professionally.
The roots of MDRT have endured for 80 years as a mortality and morbidity based association. And while our clients may be aging to a point in their lives where life insurance is not a primary focus there is still growing needs for older clients to protect themselves from the ravages of long-term care costs and the peace of mind from lifetime incomes via annuities.
In the year ahead our member driven committees will take a fresh look at the role investment and liability protection financial products should play in membership qualifications.
We also know that as our seasoned members gear down their practices or focus less on younger client development their experience and wisdom is needed to motivate the next generation of MDRT members. That is why the "Life Member" category is so important to many members who are eager to stay connected to the round table.
As always your thoughts and ideas along the way are appreciated and welcomed.
My best,
Phil

Chip Black Tuesday, September 5, 2006Phil: For over a quarter century MDRT has played a major role in shaping my business, financial and personal success. I'm not ready to retire, but many of my clients are. As my clients have aged, their needs have changed and the services I provide to them have changed. There is less need for insurance and greater emphasis on investments, financial planning and estate planning. I've heard the MDRT wants to return to its roots, with greater emphasis on insurance. Does this mean that MDRT is going to abandon those of us whose practice has evolved to meet the needs of our "boomer" clients? Will we still have a place at the Table, or are we going to "age-out" of MDRT?

Dick Sawyer Tuesday, September 5, 2006Congratulations Phil on your year as MDRT President.
A suggestion would be to have each of us make contact with our top 10 clients who turn 60 this year. Ask them, "What is important to you as you turn 60?" We then send those repsonses to MDRT and we begin to see what are the similar answers. Collectively, we can then reaffirm what is important and begin to clarify strategies that will best address those concerns.

Thank you and the MDRT Executive Committee for your contributions at the recent NAIFA Convention and Career Conference. Recognizing the role that both premier associations have played in my profession, I feel it is imperative that we build membership in both associations through a strong relationship.
