I thought I would share some of my thoughts and experiences during my first month and a half serving on the Executive Committee. Having served on numerous committees in the past, I had some perspective on MDRT and the myriad of initiatives implemented to enhance the value of membership. Why MDRT? Show me another organization that invests so much into the Annual Meeting, the resources, the publications and at the same time delivers the prestige MDRT commands in the world of insurance.
My first meeting was the April 2006 Management Council Meeting. The dedication and passion each of the council members displayed was awesome. Every member who serves, or has served, on a committee does so with zeal. Why?
Next on the docket was the Annual Meeting in June. It was fun to see so many long time friends and the enthusiasm they all maintain for MDRT. At 40,000 feet, you can really feel the power of MDRT and see how important this organization is to so many. Again, why?
Maybe you ask yourself that question when the membership application comes each year. As a 37-year member, the answer for me has had many facets. There has been the sharing of ideas, the encouragement to continue the good fight, the study group and personal relationships. But at the core – MDRT to me has meant perspective. I never really appreciated the big picture until I started regularly attending the MDRT Annual Meeting. It was then that I began to see, and feel the power of the many.
August and September brought organization. I have had the pleasure of sitting around the Executive Committee table with Stephen Rothschild, Phil Harriman, Jim Rogers and Walton Rogers. These dedicated men have invested so much of themselves into the well-being of MDRT. I can tell you there is no personal gain attached to their devotion. They are here because they want to serve the membership and continue the MDRT spirit for each of us.
We are fortunate to have members, like them, who feel this way about MDRT and the industry and are willing to serve.
