If you picked up a newspaper, logged onto the Internet or turned on your TV last week, you probably noticed the massive wave of media coverage surrounding Kathleen Casey-Kirschling – the first Baby Boomer in the United States to apply for Social Security.
Like this article from Reuters, much of the coverage focused on the fact that the retirement of Baby Boomers threatens to overwhelm U.S. government finances, and that lawmakers have failed to fix the problem. Similar issues also exist in other countries throughout the world.
The solution, of course, lies in the hands of each of us. To help Baby Boomers prepare for retirement in a world where they may not be able to count on Social Security and other traditional retirement benefits, MDRT members must do what we do best – encourage these consumers to take action on their own behalf.
The time to act is now, and the massive amount of media coverage dedicated to the Social Security issue last week provides for a great conversation starter.
